Introduction to Home Education: Getting Started on an Exciting Journey
Welcome to the world of home education! Embarking on this journey with your child is an exciting and fulfilling experience that opens up a world of possibilities. As a home-educating parent, you have the unique opportunity to tailor your child’s education to their individual needs, interests, and learning styles. In this introduction, we will explore the essential aspects of homeschooling and guide you through the initial steps of getting started. Whether you’re new to homeschooling or considering it as an alternative to traditional schooling, this guide will provide valuable insights and practical tips to help you begin this rewarding adventure.
What is Home Education?
Home Education refers to the practice of educating children at home, often facilitated by parents or guardians. It offers a flexible and personalized approach to learning, allowing you to create a customized curriculum that aligns with your child’s unique strengths, weaknesses, and passions. By opting for home education, you have the freedom to design an educational experience that fosters creativity, critical thinking, and a love for lifelong learning.
Home Education or Homeschooling
You will often find that I use the words Home Education and Homeschooling interchangeably here on Rainy Day Homeschooling. This is because although as a English family we use the word home education our friends around the world may use the word homeschooling more frequently.
But they can have slightly different connotations. Homeschooling generally refers to the practice of parents or guardians taking on the role of educators and directly teaching their children at home. It often involves following a structured curriculum, adhering to specific guidelines, and meeting legal requirements set by educational authorities. On the other hand, home education has a broader scope and encompasses a more holistic approach to learning. It emphasizes creating an educational environment within the home that fosters exploration, independent study, and experiential learning.
Home education can involve a variety of approaches, such as unschooling, where children learn through self-directed exploration, or unit studies, where interdisciplinary topics are explored in depth. While homeschooling tends to follow a more traditional schooling model, home education embraces a more flexible and individualized approach that encourages lifelong learning and personal growth.
Ultimately, the difference lies either in where you live in the world or in the level of structure and flexibility in the educational approach you take to this journey.
Benefits of Home Educating
Home educating provides a range of benefits for both parents and children. Some advantages include:
Individualized Instruction
With home education, you can adapt teaching methods and pace to suit your child’s learning style and abilities. This individualized instruction allows for better comprehension and a deeper understanding of the subjects. Coming from a teaching background this was the biggest incentive for me to start. I was able to individualize what we did to the interests of my kids and as a family. Instead of having to teach 20 to 30 kids I was able to focus just on the 2 of them and provide them with individual learning plans and focus help in areas where they needed extra support.
Flexible Schedule
Unlike traditional schooling, home education allows you to set your own schedule. This flexibility enables you to create a learning environment that accommodates your family’s unique routines and interests. You can decide your academic year – whether you want to follow a more traditional school year or you may decide that year-round home education is the way your family wants to move forward.
Tailored Curriculum
Home-educating your kids grants you the freedom to choose curriculum materials and resources that align with your child’s interests and values. You can personalize their education by focusing on specific subjects, incorporating real-world experiences, and exploring diverse learning opportunities. I can’t tell you how many rabbit holes of learning our journey has involved, delving deeper and deeper into subjects that I never thought would have been of interest to the kids. But that they loved.
Stronger Family Bonds
Home education provides an opportunity for stronger family connections as you spend more time together, engaging in educational activities and shared experiences. Remember that learning may not look like a school environment in your family, it could be filled with adventures and exploration away from the desk or tabletop and your home education space.

Getting Started Home Educating
As you make your decision to start your home education journey here are some of the things to help you get started. Take the time whilst you are deschooling your child and yourself to figure it out for your family.
You may also want to consider whether you will follow an academic year or do year-round homeschooling.
Research and Planning
Begin by researching the legal requirements and regulations for home education in your area. I am not an expert and I can just tell you about the process that we went through in our area. But, each area and country has their own requirements. You need to know what these are and what you will need to do to fulfil any requirements you need.
You’ll also need to familiarize yourself with different teaching styles and learning styles as well as curriculum options and the resources that you have available to you.
Check out our guides to some of the different homeschooling styles:
Set Goals and Vision
Define your educational goals and your vision for your child’s home education experience. Consider their interests, strengths, and future aspirations. This will guide your curriculum choices and help you track progress over time. Think about your own beliefs and values that will impact this. Use our guide to help you to establish these for yourself.
Design a Curriculum
Based on your goals and objectives, select a curriculum or mix of resources that align with your child’s learning style and interests. Look for materials that cover core subjects while also incorporating creative and physical activities as well.
There are so many options available from free resources to expensive done-for-you curriculum options providing everything that you will need to teach your child that subject area. Make sure that whatever you pick aligns with your goals and vision for your family.
Create a Schedule
Establish a flexible daily or weekly schedule that balances structured learning time, independent study, and hands-on activities. Be open to adjusting the schedule as you discover what works best for your child and your family’s dynamic.
Over time our schedule, routine, and rhythm have changed, when the kids were very young we adopted a rhythm aligned with Waldorf Steiner’s approach to education, and as they have grown we evolved into Eclectic Home Educators taking areas for many different educational approaches and philosophies to create a schedule that worked for us.
Organise your Space
You don’t need a beautiful muted coloured room dedicated to home eduction in your home. In face, you can home-educate anywhere! There are families that home educate in vans, boats, homes like yours and mine and yes some also have dedicated rooms when they have the space available.
But it’s more about being organised than what space you have we have put together a guide to setting up your home education space with information about things you may want to consider as you start this journey with your kids.
Locate Support Networks
Connect with local home-educating communities, online forums, and social media groups to find support and advice from experienced homeschoolers. Engaging with others in similar situations can provide valuable insights, resources, and a sense of community. I started out with Facebook looking at the large home education groups and then narrowing it down to local groups.
Once we visited local groups and got to know more and more people we found even more groups and experiences to go on with kids. It has been amazing finding all these people that are doing what we are doing but all of us in our own ways.
As you embark on the home education journey, remember that it is an evolving process. Embrace the freedom and flexibility it offers while staying adaptable to your child’s changing needs and interests. The bond you create with your child and the joy of witnessing their growth and development will make every effort worthwhile.
