Techniques for Writing Descriptive Passages

There are different techniques for writing descriptive text as opposed to dialogue that will help your child to incorporate sensory details, and vivid imagery and use figurative language in their writing so all of the senses can be engaged. By using the tips and techniques for descriptive writing you can help their description come alive.

1. Engage the Sense – all 5, it’s not just what you can see.
2. Show don’t tell – good descriptive writing immerses the reader in the situation but doesn’t tell them like it is.
3. Use figurative language – similes, metaphors, personification and more come into play.
4. Strong Imagery – descriptive adjectives and strong verbs can help readers imagine themselves in the situation.
5. Sense of place – creating strong places helps to ground a story and lets people immerse themselves into the situation more easier

Descriptive Creative Writing Prompts for 6 to 11-year-olds

We’ve put together some inspiring descriptive creative writing prompts for 6 to 11 year olds to help you encourage your kids to expand their writing skills.

• Imagine you are standing on top of a tall mountain. Describe the breathtaking view around you, including the colors, sounds, and feelings you experience.
• Choose a household object (e.g., a pencil, a toy, a kitchen utensil) and describe it as if it were a character in a story. Use descriptive language to bring it to life.
• Imagine you have a magical door in your backyard that leads to a secret world. Describe what the world looks like, who lives there, and what adventures you have.
• Close your eyes and think about your favorite food. Describe it in such detail that the reader can almost taste it. Include its appearance, texture, and flavors.
• Write a descriptive paragraph about a character from your favorite book or movie. Include physical appearance, personality traits, and any unique details that make them stand out.

• Imagine you are stranded on a deserted island. Describe the sights, sounds, and sensations you experience, as well as the emotions and challenges you face.
• Think about a historical event or era that fascinates you. Transport your reader back in time with a vivid description of the setting, the people, and the significant moments that define that period.
• Choose a natural disaster (e.g., a thunderstorm, a tornado, a wildfire) and describe it from the perspective of someone experiencing it. Capture the intensity, the fear, and the awe-inspiring nature of the event.
• Select a famous artwork (painting, sculpture, or photograph) and describe it in such detail that the reader can visualize it without seeing it. Capture the colors, textures, and emotions it evokes.
• Choose a favorite fictional location (e.g., Hogwarts, Narnia, Middle-earth) and describe it in intricate detail. Capture the sights, sounds, and atmosphere of this beloved fictional world.
