By bringing descriptive writing into our home education journey we can encourage our children to do the same as those fantastic authors.
The Role of Creative Writing Prompts
Creative writing prompts act as springboards for imagination, providing starting points and inspiration for descriptive writing. Techniques for Writing Descriptive Passages
There are different techniques for writing descriptive text as opposed to dialogue that will help your child to incorporate sensory details, and vivid imagery and use figurative language in their writing so all of the senses can be engaged. By using the tips and techniques for descriptive writing you can help their description come alive.
- Engage the Sense – all 5, it’s not just what you can see.
- Show don’t tell – good descriptive writing immerses the reader in the situation but doesn’t tell them like it is.
- Use figurative language – similes, metaphors, personification and more come into play.
- Strong Imagery – descriptive adjectives and strong verbs can help readers imagine themselves in the situation.
- Sense of place – creating strong places helps to ground a story and lets people immerse themselves into the situation more easier
