In this month’s nature study, we’ll embark on a journey to uncover the mysteries of changing leaves and discover a world of wonder right in your backyard. So, grab your jackets and notebooks; it’s time to explore, learn, and connect with nature!

October Nature Study

Leaf Identification

October is the perfect time to delve into the wonderful world of Leaves. We have a full nature study unit on Leaves for you to explore this month including how to preserve leaves for your nature journals.

Why not also take leaf rubbings and spend some time discussing why leaves change colour in the fall.

Pumpkin Patch

As you head out to pick your pumpkin it’s the perfect time for some pumpkin nature study and an ideal time to include some science. Spend some time learning about the life cycle of the pumpkin – in fact plan ahead and start your own science experiment for the coming year by collecting your own pumpkin seeds for growing pumpkins in your backyard as part of garden schooling in the spring.

Spend some time dissecting the pumpkins and learn about the different parts of these amazing autumnal fruit.

Bird Migration Watch

October in many areas is the peak of the migration for birds that fly north or south for the winter months. Grab some binoculars, and your bird spotting guide and head outside to see what wonderful species you can find. Fungi Nature Study

There are so many different species of fungi that appear around this time of year and these wonderful creatures that are part of their own kingdom of living things are worth studying. Why not combine some maths and science with a fungus study and dive into some of these amazing fungus books to learn more about these amazing and unique living things.

Spiders and their Webs

Have you ever notice how on a fall morning with either frost or dew in the air that the spiders webs shine like diamonds? Fall is the ideal time to do some spider studies. Look at the different species you can find we like using our Seek App to identify the different species we find.

You could also have a go at capturing a spiders web – make sure that it’s a web that has been discarded and then follow these instructions on how to capture a spiders web.
