How to Encourage Scientific Thinking in Young Children
Science isn’t just about experiments, it’s about wondering, noticing, asking questions, and discovering the world. But how do we nurture that natural curiosity in our youngest learners? The good news? If you’ve ever paused to answer a “Why?” or explored a puddle after a storm, you’re already doing it. Here are a few gentle ways to encourage scientific thinking in your preschooler, no worksheets or fancy labs required.

Ask Open Ended Questions
Whether you’re baking, painting, or walking through the woods, open-ended questions turn everyday moments into learning opportunities. Instead of offering choices or answers, try asking:
- “What do you think will happen if we mix these colours?”
- “Why do you think the leaves are changing?”
These kinds of questions invite curiosity and give your child space to wonder aloud.

Let Them Make Predictions
Preschoolers are naturally great at guessing and imagining, which means they’re already thinking like scientists! Before trying a new activity or experiment, ask:
“What do you think will happen?” Then test it out together. Even if they’re “wrong,” that’s where learning happens.
Celebrate Mistakes
As Thomas Edison once said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Let your child know that it’s OK when things don’t go as planned. Try saying: “Oops, that didn’t work! What could we try next?” Mistakes are stepping stones to discovery, and part of every scientist’s journey, I wish my teenagers understood this.

Curiosity Grows in Playful, Everyday Moments
By encouraging questions, celebrating their ideas, and exploring together, you’re helping your child build confidence, resilience, and a lifelong love of learning. You don’t need a structured curriculum at this age, just the space to wonder and the freedom to explore.
