Summer Solstice Nature Activities for Preschoolers
The summer solstice marks the longest day of the year, a time when the sun lingers a little longer in the sky, and the world feels bright, warm, and full of life. For young children, it’s a beautiful invitation to pause, look closely, and connect with the nature around them. To help you make the most of the season, I’ve gathered a few gentle, low-prep nature activities that you and your preschooler can enjoy together. Here are some simple ways to celebrate the summer solstice through play, observation, and wonder.

Here are some simple, story-led activities you can enjoy with your 3–6-year-old to gently explore the solstice through play, observation, and wonder.
If you have older children too, you can pair these ideas with our Summer Solstice Unit Study for a seasonal celebration the whole family can enjoy.
1. Watch the Shadows Move
Why: The sun is at its highest, and shadows change throughout the day!
Try This:
- Go outside in the morning and trace your child’s shadow with chalk.
- Return in the afternoon and trace again.
- Talk about the difference: “Is it longer or shorter? Why do you think that is?”
This introduces basic ideas about the sun’s movement in a visual, playful way.
2. Make a Sun-Themed Nature Mandala
Why: It connects creativity, symmetry, and seasonal awareness.
What You’ll Need:
- Yellow, orange, and green nature finds (flowers, leaves, grass, stones)
Try This:
- Create a circle in the grass or on a large piece of paper.
- Help your child arrange nature items into a sunburst pattern.
- Take a photo and return the items to nature afterward.
This also makes a lovely calming afternoon activity.
3. Read a Sun-Inspired Story
Books help make sense of seasonal change through rhythm and story.
Try These:
- Sun! One in a Billion by Stacy McAnulty
- And Then Comes Summer by Tom Brenner
- Hello, Summer! by Shelley Rotner
Pair your storytime with a quiet nature snack or picnic outside.

4. Explore Solstice Senses
Ask:
- What do you see that tells you it’s summer?
- What do you hear? Birds, bees, lawnmowers?
- Can you feel the sun on your face or breeze on your skin?
Encourage your child to describe their experience or draw it in a nature journal.
5. Make a Solstice Snack Together
Celebrate the day with a bright, sunny fruit snack! Use yellow/orange fruits (mango, pineapple, strawberries) and shape them like a sun on a plate. We love this idea for a sun snack for kids.
You could even freeze the leftovers into mini solstice ice lollies!
