What are Virtual Field Trips?

A great question, virtual field trips are online experiences that allow children to explore fascinating places, landmarks, museums, and cultural sites through immersive multimedia platforms. These digital adventures use interactive tools, 360-degree imagery, videos, and educational resources to transport children to locations they might otherwise never visit.

Stand at Giza and admire the Sphinx, look out into outer space from the window of a space station or travel under the sea to learn more about the world beneath the waves at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

We’ve used these digital field trips a lot over the past few years as travel has been limited but even with the world open again they can enhance your home education journey no end.

What are the Benefits of Virtual Field Trips?

Although in a perfect world, we would be able to transport our children to anywhere we wanted to experience first hand these virtual field trips offer numerous advantages, including:

  • Global Exploration: Children can virtually visit famous landmarks, historical sites, and natural wonders across the globe, expanding their knowledge of different cultures, environments, and historical events. In our Maya Unit Study, I shared just one of the great resources we have found.
  • Multisensory Learning: Interactive features such as virtual tours, videos, and quizzes engage multiple senses, enhancing comprehension and retention of information.
  • Flexibility and Accessibility: Virtual field trips can be accessed anytime, anywhere, making them convenient for homeschoolers or those with limited travel opportunities. You can integrate them into your curriculum as needed, and if at a later date you get to experience the real thing then you have a perfect opportunity to discuss with your kids the differences and similarities between what they experienced virtually and in person.
