If you’re fortunate to have access to a beach this is the perfect opportunity to delve into the mysteries of these coastal environments. Gather your family and embark on an adventure that will engage all of your senses, nurturing a deep appreciation for these vital habitats.
Suggestions for the Nature Study at the Seashore

Observing Tides
One of the most captivating aspects of the seashore is the ebb and flow of the tides. Take note of the high and low tides during your visit, and explore how they shape the shoreline and influence the lives of coastal organisms. Observe the intertidal zone, a magical space that emerges during low tide, revealing tide pools filled with an abundance of life. Study the fascinating creatures that call this zone home, from colourful sea anemones to scuttling hermit crabs.
Delving into Tide Pools
Tide pools offer a unique glimpse into marine life, showcasing the adaptations of species to survive in this ever-changing environment. Encourage your little explorers to carefully investigate these miniature ecosystems. Examine the textures and colors of sea stars, sea urchins, and barnacles. Beach Combing
As you stroll along the seashore, keep an eye out for seashells and other coastal treasures washed ashore by the waves. Better known as Beach Combing this scavenger hunt is great for kids of all ages. Identifying different types of shells and learning about the creatures that once inhabited them. Discuss how these shells contribute to the beach ecosystem and protect the organisms within. Marvel at the diversity of shapes, sizes, and colours you encounter, and let your imagination run wild with stories of the sea.
Look out for other finds you may see – on pebble beaches, it’s not uncommon to find fossilised shark teeth amongst the stones.
Shore Bird Watching
Grab a pair of binoculars and observe the diverse species of shorebirds that call the beach their home. Learn about their feeding habits, migration patterns, and unique adaptations for coastal living.
Take along your smartphone and download the app Merlin and use this to help you identify the calls of the different birds that you can hear.

Sand Dune Study
Sand dunes are a unique ecosystem and play a critical role in protecting coastal ecosystems. So venture into them and learn more about their formation as you observe the unique plants and animals that have adapted to these challenging conditions.
Seaweed Identification
Learn about the different types of algae and sea grass that wash ashore. Study their unique structures, discuss their ecological importance, and discover the ways in which they are used in various industries. Take a guidebook with you and you make even discover that some of them are edible and a real delicacy.
Beach Clean-up Initiative
Maybe whilst at the seashore you could take part in beach clean-up with the family. Just taking part in 2 minutes of clean up of the litter that you see on the beach can really help with efforts. Remember that what you see on the beach will be washed away at the next tide and there is no guarantee it will wash back up at the same place next high tide. Instead, it could become another part of the problem like the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
Conservation and Coastal Stewardship
During your seashore exploration, it’s important to discuss the fragility of these coastal ecosystems and the significance of conservation efforts. Explore the impacts of human activities on these habitats, such as pollution, habitat destruction, and climate change.
Brainstorm ways in which your family can contribute to coastal stewardship, whether through reducing plastic waste, participating in beach clean-ups, or supporting local conservation organizations.
You may be lucky and see conservation efforts in action, many beaches have conservation projects protecting the ecosystems. Sea Turtles, wetland birds, seals and other creatures and plants are a focus see what is available near you.
